It’s difficult but you have to remember there are ways to grab a consumers interest and make them reconsider their preferred brand. The most important one is low-risk testing. Whether it’s a free sample, big discount for first time customers or something else, you need to give them a reason to try you out.

People will be loyal but the majority of consumers will try something new if they feel that the risk, or cost to test them out, is much lower and worth a try. After that, the quality of what you offer will determine weather those consumers remain loyal to your competitor or are willing to consider trading up.
